Shoto Todoroki
My Hero Academia
Hero Name: Shoto
Male

Legend
Abilities
⯌ Quirk: Half-Hot, Half-Cold
Shoto has the ability to produce both ice and fire from either his right or left side of his body. His entire body is divided in half, signified most prominently by the clear division in his hair colour, the white being the cold side and the red being the hot. His fire can reach temperatures upwards of 1500 degrees Celcius, but never hits 2500 where it would change from white to blue.

⯌ Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall
A massive spiked wall of ice, used more often as a defensive measure than an attack, but he sometimes incorporates it to trap someone within the ice temporarily.

⯌ Wall of Flames
A flurry of fire that can remain if he wills it to.

⯌ Flashfreeze Heatwave
Shoto chills the air at once and then attacks it with fire in a fiery explosion, the potency raised because he chilled the air first.

⯌ Flashfire Fist
A move belonging to Endeavor, Shoto is just starting to work with it, concentrating on his flames to increase the heat to turn them white.

In-Character
⯌ Physical Contact
Shoto is not particularly good with sudden, physical contact. It's better not to startle him. Asking first or doing something like making the offer is likely to get a much better reception than glomping onto him. His reaction to the latter is mostly to tense up and pull away.

⯌ Romance
He hasn't spent much time thinking about romance, he's a little dense and oblivious, so being direct would be the best way to get his attention. He's not necessarily opposed to it, it just hasn't been on his radar, mostly due to the fact he hasn't ever had a good example of something like that in his life.

⯌ Violence
Shoto welcomes sparring, and around certain people he can be a bit of a hot head, but for most people without knowing what buttons to push he's hard to get a rise out of. He's willing to fight if he has to.

⯌ Injuries
This is fine, par for the course for him.

⯌ Death
Ask first, the answer is probably yes.

⯌ Telepathy and Mind Reading
Shoto would not be overly thrilled by this, but if it helped someone else he'd probably agree. Ask first.

* Quirk: Half-Hot, Half-Cold - Shoto has the ability to produce both ice and fire from either his right or left side of his body. His entire body is divided in half, signified most prominently by the clear division in his hair colour, the white being the cold side and the red being the hot. His fire can reach temperatures upwards of 1500 degrees Celcius, but never hits 2500 where it would change from white to blue. Using too much of one side or the other can lead to frostbite or heatstroke if he doesn't balance out the use of his elements and Shoto is currently still struggling with dual wielding.

Special moves include: Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall, Wall of Flames, Flashfreeze Heatwave and he's dabbling with Flashfire Fist.

Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: A two-toned halo in the reverse of his hair, split the same way and a pair of wings, one made of ice and one made of fire on their respective sides. Shoto will gain a strong danger sense so he can find people in trouble. His Legend traits kick in when his danger sense does, giving him a faster way to zip around. He will have to work to control his wings like he does everything else. Provided he engages them equally, they will be the same strength as one another. If he backslides and ignores his left, then his left wing would grow weak.
Role Reasoning: Shoto was born to be put on the Legend track, and while that doesn't always have the best results for him he genuinely enjoys helping people and doing his best to make things as peaceful and comfortable as possible. His desire to help other people extends far beyond his conditioning and upbringing and his entire mission in life is to stop those that would harm others and upend society. He's a genuine, bonafide hero. He has a strong desire to save those who won't save themselves, as well as anyone who needs help, and as he found out the hard way - sometimes a hero intervenes even when his help is not wanted. He has a strong desire to help those who cannot protect themselves, thanks to his upbringing.

❥ Personality

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

  • The relationship most defining to Shoto is his relationship with his father, Enji Todoroki. There's nothing really remotely positive in this relationship. Enji has been horrifically abusive to his family, perpetuating pretty much every abuse imaginable. As Enji's masterpiece, Shoto was isolated from the rest of the family after Toya attempted to attack him. The only member he had contact with was his mother Rei, until she scalded him and Enji had her hospitalized to keep her away from his son.

What followed was Enji exerting a degree of total control over Shoto's life, including what he did and when, who he spoke to, going so far as to educate him to ignore other children (especially his rejected siblings). This control was exacerbated with what he called training, from the moment Shoto's quirk manifested at age four or five. Training included strong physical abuse, under the pretense of making Shoto stronger. While Shoto did eventually gain some strength, he really blossomed once he was let out of this confinement, with proper training.

The scars that Enji left within him are nowhere near closed. Shoto's lack of socialization troubles him in his day to day life. He rarely knows what people are talking about and he takes things incredibly literally, due to lacking life experience. He is outwardly hostile towards his father, despite the man turning over a new leaf one day and begging for his forgiveness, something Shoto is unwilling to give at this time, if ever. He's lacking proper bonds and connections with his family members, including his mother who he feels he is the one holding her hostage, accepting half the blame for her present incarcerated state. The dynamic in the house is so bad that Shoto does not really know what a healthy relationship looks like.

  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

  • Based on the injury and what passed as first aid, and the fact that Rei was in the middle of a mental health crisis, Enji was always working all day, it's incredibly likely that Shoto has some degree of diminished vision in his left eye, something could maybe have been prevented if Rei didn't ice him over. His firepower and strength are designed in such a way that people would have to face him head on, in his field of vision easily, regardless of that being true because he tends to control the battlefield. It's a stark reminder, one of many of the scars he bears and likely feeds into his guilt that he feels like he drove his mother away. Like many other things in his life, it's something that cannot be undone.

The flashpoint for Enji's turnaround is not clear, but in all likelihood, Shoto's release from isolation from the family began when he was accepted to UA. Natsuo is newly in college, he would've been leaving or had just left at the time which is why he complains he doesn't know anything about his little brother, including what his favourite food is. It highlights the degree to which Shoto is struggling to form bonds with people he should have had bonds with before, compounded with the fact that in all likelihood Enji's decision to be a better person probably came around the same time.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

  • Class 1-A is his safespace. Shoto came from somewhere nightmarish, from a situation where he was lost and alone, and no one would believe him if he said anything, to a place that while competitive, ended up being far more nurturing. His training is far more focused on him and his abilities, rather than beating the pulp out of him to prove he's weak. He made friends with 19 wonderful classmates, who are wonderfully supportive and have his back, through thick and thin. He's never felt so at home or relaxed as he has in the dorms with all of his friends. He's been given the chance to breathe and act his age and get caught up on the nuances of socialization.

  • What is a time where your character failed drastically at something and how did it impact them, what did they do about it?

  • Shoto kind of showed up and breezed his way through the early days of UA on the strength of his ice alone. His strength at the time was measured as to be roughly the same as an average professional. As he adjusted and his façade thawed, letting his emotions in, when he attempted the Provisional Licensing Exam the first time he lost himself in a stupid pissing match with Inasa Yoarashi, who saw Shoto ice cold like his father, thanks to an encounter at the UA Entrance Exam. This poor judgement and distraction caused him to lose points in the rescue exercise, and caused him to fail. It was one of Shoto's first obstacles in a long time and while he was ashamed of himself and haunted by the fact he failed, he refused to give up. He dove headfirst into his studies, meeting the challenges offered and actually getting close to fellow flunked applicant, Katsuki Bakugo, actually getting a friend out of the experience. The setback humbled him, and ultimately made him realize that as talented as he may be, he was still going to have to work to achieve his dream.
